What is the future of the Port Community System?
Written by Jean Edouard Nicolet, Business Development Manager
The continued success and industry appeal of Port Community Systems (PCS) stems from its ability to innovate, digitise and streamline tasks and processes that are essential to the smooth running of a port as well as its positive impact on surrounding industries and infrastructure.
The system has established itself as an integral part of the way modern ports and customs authorities conduct their business by introducing and implementing forward-facing techniques and operations across the entire business landscape.
But what does the future look like for ports and entities that are currently connected to the PCS ecosystem and how can they continue to grow in a highly competitive world that is constantly seeking expansion, development and ever easier and faster trade processes?
To boost the effectiveness PCSs and draw new traffic, ports, nations and regions must strive to innovate the ways in which they process goods in a rapid and efficient manner.
The advancement of PCS relies on the adoption of new technology, the swifter movement of cargo, greater integration of globally recognised operations and a drive towards a worldwide logistics system that involves the entire journey from point A to Z, across continents, oceans and everywhere in between.
Nowadays, the hinterland connectivity of various modes of transport is the main area where innovation is constantly required, and maintaining this demand for innovation will be a challenge in the future with greater automation integrated within a PCS the most likely outcome.
Mixing security, fluidity and data integrity in an optimised trade logistics chain represents a serious advantage for today’s digitalised and PCS enabled corridors; preserving and expanding on this mix of safety and smooth movement in the future will be essential to the growth of PCS networks.
Regions, ports, nations and more must realise that working together is the ultimate goal for a stronger, swifter industry and that a unified movement of data and goods is a huge benefit to all. As PCSs advance, data will continue to flow quicker than cargo. The aim will be to secure and facilitate trade from a regional level to a global level through major advances in networks and a drive towards cooperation through increased partnerships.
Today’s PCS have opened the door and shown what is possible through collaboration, automation and digitisation. These processes must be allowed to flourish and evolve to make the transition to the next generation of trade as seamless as possible.
