José Luis Plazas Niño, VP of Sales, Latin America Region
It was a pleasure to participate in the 11th Latin America Ports Forum in Panama City, representing Webb Fontaine on the panel "Digital Transformation, Interoperability and Cybersecurity."
The Forum highlighted one clear conclusion: port transformation is no longer simply about introducing more technology, but about ensuring that processes, systems, stakeholders and data work together in an integrated way.
During the panel, we shared several insights that I consider particularly relevant to the future of Latin America's ports.
Digital transformation must begin with understanding processes and procedures, identifying inefficiencies and establishing proper data governance. A port may have excellent systems, but if information is not reliable, consistent, traceable and shared in a timely manner, achieving true interoperability will remain difficult.
In this context, Port Community Systems (PCS) play a strategic role. They should not be seen merely as software, but as digital infrastructure capable of connecting authorities, terminals, shipping lines, agents, transport operators and logistics providers through coordinated processes and reliable information.
We also discussed the growing role of Artificial Intelligence as a copilot for port operations and management. AI can enhance our ability to analyse information, detect anomalies, anticipate risks, prioritise operations and support better decision-making.
This vision is closely aligned with what we aim to achieve at Webb Fontaine through Webb Ports, our Port Community System: connecting port communities, enabling interoperability and transforming fragmented information into greater visibility and operational coordination.
"The future of smart ports is not simply about automating more, but about connecting better, anticipating better and making better decisions."
Special thanks to Alexandre Reali, CEO of Terminal Investment Ltd. Panama; Ricardo Lince B., CEO of Agencias Continental; Carlos Enrique Ungo, Senior Technology and Cybersecurity Manager at APM Terminals Balboa; and Gustavo Davis, Assistant VP & Head RHQ LATAM at CrimsonLogic, for sharing their experiences, perspectives and contributing to such a valuable panel discussion.
Thank you also to the organisers and all participants of the Latin America Ports Forum for creating these opportunities to exchange ideas and for the conversations that will undoubtedly continue beyond the event.
